The school for veterinary education was established in 1856, when Dr. Carol Davila founded in Bucharest the first medical school in the Balkan countries that also had courses in the field of animal diseases. In 1861, the field of Veterinary Medicine became independent, as a Veterinary School, with its own educational plan.

In 1883, under the direction of Professor Alexandru Locusteanu, the Veterinary School obtained the status of a Higher School of Veterinary Medicine and the construction of the buildings on the current campus began, by purchasing a 3 ha plot of land (between Splaiul Independentei and Izvor street) by three professors of the time.

In 1921, the Law on the transformation of the Higher School of Veterinary Medicine into a Faculty is voted. Through this act, veterinary medical education received its definitive dedicated as university education. At that time, it was the only faculty of veterinary medicine in the Balkans, many students from neighboring countries (Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Macedonia, Albania, Greece) graduated and are still graduating in Romania.

Over time, the Alma Mater of Romanian veterinary education has continuously evolved, through the diversification of the educational offer, through the professionalism of the teaching staff and through the development of the facilities, culminating in the opening, in March 2020, of the first University Emergency Hospital in the country and in the first five from Europe, Prof. univ. The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Bucharest is the first profile faculty in Romania evaluated and included since March 2002 on the list of faculties approved by the European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education (EAEVE).

Also, the veterinary medical field is sectorally regulated at European level by specific legislation, namely Directive 2013/55/EU amending Directive 2005/36/EC transposed into Romanian legislation by GD 469/2015; the students’ training during the 6 years of study (acquired skills and abilities) and the degree obtained are automatically recognized throughout Europe from day one.
