The University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Bucharest (USAMV Bucharest) is strengthening its international presence by signing a cooperation agreement (MoU) with the University of Nairobi, Kenya. The agreement was signed by Prof. Univ. Dr. Sorin-Mihai Cîmpeanu, the rector of USAMV Bucharest, within the framework of an official meeting held in Nairobi, opening new opportunities for cooperation in research and innovation, sustainable development, joint international projects, and academic mobility for students, doctoral candidates, and teaching staff.
The meeting took place alongside the Rector’s participation in the OECD conference “Mobilising the private sector for sustainable trade and investment in the agri-food sector in Africa”, held in Nairobi from February 9–10, 2026.The conference brought together African ministers and high-level officials in the field of agriculture and the agri-food sector, representatives of international and regional financial institutions, as well as the private sector. The Romanian delegation was composed of: the State Secretary for European Affairs, the Middle East and Africa – Mrs. Clara Staicu, the State Secretary within the Ministry of Agriculture and Sustainable Development – Mr. Florian-Emil Dumitru, the Senator and the President of the National Council of Rectors, Rector of USAMV Bucharest – Prof. Univ. Dr. Sorin – Mihai Cîmpeanu, various experts and representatives of the public and private environment involved in the development of innovative solutions for the agri-food sector. This event marks a milestone in consolidating the OECD–Africa partnership and underscores Romania’s firm commitment towards cooperation with the African continent, in alignment with the National Strategy “Romania – Africa: Partnership for the future through peace, development and education”. Furthermore, the conference highlighted the Romania’s ongoing support for OECD values and tools in the context of the process of accession to the organization.
Erasmus+ Mobilities and academic cooperation
The partnership is already supported by Erasmus+ mobility flows. Consequently, in the month of January 2026, a delegation from USAMV Bucharest conducted a mobility in Kenya and starting from April 1, 2026, two doctoral students from the University of Nairobi will carry out research stages within USAMV Bucharest for a period of three months. Moreover, the call for applications for doctoral students from USAMV Bucharest interested in three-month stages at the University of Nairobi is open, within the framework of the Erasmus+ KA171 program.
Erasmus+ Capacity Building Projects
USAMV Bucharest is a partner in the application of the project GREENVET – AFRICA-Green and Digital Modernisation of Veterinary Training: Climate – Resilient Animal Health, Surveillance and Food-System Safety in Sub-Saharan Africa, recently submitted under the ERASMUS-EDU-2026-CBHE call. The project, with a total budget of 800,000 euros, is submitted in partnership with EPDRI – The European Institute for Policy Research and Development (Slovenia), University of Lisbon (Portugal), University of Nairobi and Egerton University (Kenya), Sokoine University and The Nelson Mandela African Institute of Science and Technology (Tanzania). The initiative aims at to enhance the quality of higher education and continuous professional training in the Sub-Saharan Africa, by integrating ecological skills based on the “One Health” principle.
Through these strategic steps USAMV Bucharest reaffirms its commitment to the development of global academic partnerships and to the active contribution to the sustainable transformation of the agri-food sector at the international level.
